What can I do to improve my business?

You have limited time and resources to enhance your business and compete with large businesses moving in your neighborhood.

Take an example of computer business, there were many small computer shops selling and repairing computers in their neighborhoods. Many were making money to support their families. This industry was taken out by large computer manufacturer that begun selling direct, outsourcing manufacturing, and their support. They are paying $10.00 a day to do the same work you pay $120.0 per day.

Large store chains begun not only selling their computers, but also came with their door to door support.

Small computer shops have a hard time to compete. Number one, they have advertising dollars, two they offer better insurance, and they take stock holders money and sell low to crush the small business competition.

Here is what you do:

  • Tell everyone you are in business

  • Always have business cards

  • Make sure your business appears as organized

  • Keep in contact

  • Learn Marketing

  • Create your own marketing material

  • Do not over extend

  • Budget your business

  • Tell yourself is hard work

  • Be better than your competition

  • Build loyalty between your small business community

Tell everyone your are in business:

You have to tell everyone you are in business you have started, so start a campaign and send old and new friends your announcement.

Always have business cards:

You never know who you will run into. I was in the check out lane at home depot, when we got into conversation with a tree service business. I asked some questions regarding tree service, He then asked me if I would need his services. Gave me his card and I called him later. So always be ready to do business. What business is there today may not be there tomorrow.

Make sure your business appears organized:

No matter where you are or what event you are attending, make sure you are organized. Plan on succeeding. What do I mean by that? Well if the expectation are that 100 people will attend prepare for 150. You can always use the material later, but a bad impression is not good for the future of your business. that is what they take from your event.

Keep in Contact:

It is important that you keep in contact with your customers. I know as a small business you do not have time to send out letter and mailers. Many of you do not have the budget to send weekly mailers and promotions to your customer. What do big business do? They are marketing to your customer. Technology is here and you can setup emails to be sent to your customers. You are not spamming if they are your customers and you give them tool to opt in or out.

Learn Marketing:

Successful businesses they know the abc of the marketing. What you should send, what works, and keeping track of when you get response. Additionally, you need to know if a $500.00 per month ad is working for you.

Create your own Marketing material:

Not only you save money, but also you are the only one that knows your business and knows your mission, learn on how to create marketing material. This will allow you to create marketing material that contains the message you want to communicate to your prospects and customers.

Do not over extend:

Main reason that small businesses that do not make it is that they over extend themselves. try not to finance what you can not afford, Buy things cash and make sure what you buy will increase your business, not for luxury. I know when you go to large businesses they have chairs that they have paid $3000 each in their lobby. But keep in mind this is not their own money that they are spending, if they run out they will sell some new stocks and buy more. You are not in that position, buy items that improve your business ability to generate money.

Budget your business:

Prepare a budget. You say what!! you probably do not what cash is coming in, why would you prepare a budget. A budget is not only for spending money, but also is your goal for the revenue you need and how much you have.

Tell yourself is hard work:

If you are just thinking about new business Make sure you understand that small business owners are much smarter than those who manage large business. In small business you deal with your business customer during the day and at night you are marketing agent, bookkeeper, admin clerk, office cleaners. So it is hard work and you need to be ready to wear multiple hats.

Be better than your competition:

Study your subject matter and become better than your competition. Large organizations hire people and one for each task, you need to know everything they know and more. You believe in your business and products in large organization they are told to believe in their products and services.

Build loyalty between your small business community:

Start respecting other small business owners. They are all like you. Support them and reach out to each and everyone of them. Join your forces and create groups and communities. If there small restaurant in your area go to that. What you give these people will come back to prosper your community. Let them know you are a small business owner too.
